NYC STREET GRILL

STROUDSBURG — A few doors up the street from the Sherman Theater, Ali and Sheeri Khaja do whatever it takes to turn a small storefront at 534 Main St. into a slice of the Big Apple.

In the high risk restaurant business where success is measured in years, their NYC Street Grill is in its infancy after opening just eight months ago.

“It’s a long road ahead,” said Sheeri. “We are glad we are on this road.”

The couple’s story is a common one in the Poconos. Tired of the high cost of living in New York City, they looked west for a more affordable, better life for themselves and their young children, who are 9 (twins), 7 and 5.

The couple had run delis in Long Island and Brooklyn before heading to the Poconos and setting up shop in Stroudsburg.

“It’s a totally different world,” Sheeri said. “You have to have the courage.”

So far business has been good, and their customers have been “so nice, supportive,” she said.

With his big smile and warm personality, Ali mans the grill but can also be spotted behind the cash register and sweeping the sidewalks in the morning. He summed up the business strategy saying, “Overall, the food speaks for itself.” He also said they strive for a “very kid-friendly environment.”

Ali said the deli aims for the best quality, quantity and prices. There is also another secret at work.

“We want to bring some flavor of New York to Stroudsburg,” Sheeri said.

And that they do just that with a menu featuring classic deli Boar’s Head sandwiches and bagels. Halal sandwiches are available upon request. And, for those craving something a bit more exotic, there are shawarma sandwiches on pita, grilled tikka kabab, falafel and hummus.
